Subsequently, I enrolled in the esteemed Baylor University School of Law, which boasts an exceptional litigation training program. Upon completing my legal education, I gained practical experience as a maritime defense attorney in Beaumont, Texas. Following my tenure at the Beaumont firm, I assisted a criminal defense attorney in Orange, Texas, in handling a capital murder case in Newton, Texas.
Subsequently, I joined David M. Stagner in Sherman, Texas, where I acquired valuable experience and training. In 2002, I established my own practice at 416 S. Crockett St., Sherman, where it remains today. During my practice, I specialized in insurance defense in Beaumont. Upon joining David Stagner’s firm, I took on an antitrust case involving three Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs). I employed a novel interpretation of the Texas Antitrust Act, which includes a specific provision that a practice resulting in a decline in service quality constitutes a restraint of trade. I successfully obtained a temporary injunction prohibiting the local hospital from excluding the CRNAs from its practice. This case garnered statewide attention and led me to represent CRNAs across Texas in antitrust cases against hospitals and anesthesiologists attempting to exclude them from their practices. This area of work occupied me for five years. Additionally, I collaborated on regulations granting CRNAs independent practice rights in Washington, D.C., and Austin.
We were successful in establishing these independent practice rights, which effectively ended the majority of CRNA antitrust litigation. Subsequently, I transitioned into medical malpractice litigation, primarily representing injured or deceased patients, and occasionally representing defendant doctors. My development as a trial lawyer was significantly influenced by antitrust and medical malpractice litigation. During this period, I practiced complex legal areas against some of the most accomplished attorneys in the state, which was a pivotal factor in my professional growth.
During this time, I secured numerous million-dollar settlements, including one exceeding five million dollars. In 2003, the Texas Legislature enacted stringent medical malpractice reform legislation that severely restricted viable medical malpractice cases. Consequently, I transitioned towards family law litigation, civil litigation, and personal injury litigation. My prior experience provided me with exceptional trial instincts, which proved invaluable in handling family law cases. I established a niche practice specializing in high-conflict custody cases and intricate divorce proceedings.
My wife of 30 years serves as my paralegal and actively participates in all trials and hearings. As a mother of three, she possesses strong maternal instincts. We collaborate effectively in preparing for trials and hearings, earning a reputation as an exceptional team. Notably, one opposing counsel refrained from proceeding to trial against me without bringing his wife, who was also an attorney. He justified this decision by stating that it was necessary to maintain a level playing field, as my wife and I constitute a formidable team.
